Line Manager Training |

Your managers are your first line of defence. Are they ready?

Most people issues don't land on an HR professional's desk first. They land on a line manager's. The person who's also trying to hit targets, manage a team, and get through their own to-do list.

When managers don't have the skills or confidence to handle people situations properly, small problems become big ones. Conversations get avoided. Processes get skipped. Documentation goes missing. And by the time it escalates, the options are much more limited than they would have been six weeks earlier.

Good line manager training doesn't just protect your business legally - it changes how your managers show up for their teams. And that's worth investing in.

What the training can cover…

HR Essentials is a practical, half-day session designed for line managers who are responsible for people but haven't had formal HR training. No death by PowerPoint. No textbook theory. Just the real stuff your managers actually need to know.

  • Understanding the difference between short-term and long-term absence, how to conduct a return to work conversation properly, when to trigger a formal process and how to do it without it unravelling.

  • What fair looks like from start to finish. How to investigate properly, what a disciplinary hearing actually involves, how to reach and communicate a decision - and what to avoid doing if you want the outcome to stick.

  • How to respond when an employee raises a concern, what the process should look like, and how to handle it in a way that's fair without creating unnecessary risk.

  • The ones managers keep putting off. How to plan them, how to have them, what to document and how to follow through without it turning into something bigger.

  • Why it matters, what needs to be written down, and how to keep records that actually support you if a situation escalates.

  • One of the most important things a manager can learn - recognising the point at which something needs specialist HR input, and what not to do in the meantime.

What to expect on the day

Sessions are delivered in person or virtually, depending on what works for your team. The format is conversational and practical — managers are encouraged to bring real scenarios (anonymised if needed) so the learning is grounded in situations they actually face.

You won't get a workbook full of legislation.

You'll get clear, accessible guidance that managers can apply straight away, from the session they've just sat in.

Sessions are designed for small groups - typically up to 10 managers - so there's space for proper discussion and questions. If you have a larger team, we can discuss running multiple sessions.

This is right for you if…

  • Your managers are handling people issues without HR training or support

  • You've had situations escalate because the early conversations didn't happen

  • You're growing and promoting people into management roles for the first time

  • You want to build a more consistent, confident management culture

  • You've been through a difficult disciplinary or grievance and want to make sure it's handled better next time

The investment

The exact cost depends on group size, format (in-person or virtual) and whether any bespoke content is needed for your sector or specific situations. Travel costs may apply for in-person sessions outside Warwickshire and the surrounding Midlands area.
